Lumos Laser is a startup company with a focus on ablation cooled material removal with GHz repetition rate femtosecond lasers. The core activities are developing lasers and laser applications operating in this material
processing regime. The team consists of people from both academic backgrounds as well as laser professionals with over 10 years of experience in ultrafast lasers and laser electronics, which makes them an influential
collaborator for both researchers and industrial laser users. The customers of Lumos Laser are typically the machine integrators and end user application companies. Some of the micromachining sectors where Lumos is operating are surface structuring of molds and drilling of metals for various purposes.
The core activities of TLD Photonics are ultrafast laser development, ultrafast laser applications and optical measuring systems. In ultrafast laser development the main focus is on the high power amplifier development
where TLD personnel has extensive experience in thermal management, mechanical designs and finite-element analysis. TLD developes the high power ultrafast amplifiers for high throughput micromachining. The customers of TLD are typically the machine integrators, which require high power and pulse energy ultrafast lasers for their machine applications. Some of the micromachining sectors where TLD is operating are 3D structuring of glass and polymers, watch industry, and display cutting. in addition, TLD is developing ultrafast lasers for real-time monitoring of micromachining processes. Those optical measuring systems will enable micromachining of larger objects with much higher yield. in addition to micromachining, those optical measurement systems with down to 1 micron resolution and high speed, will be used in general measuring technologies and applications where fast imaging of object 10s of cm in size with 1 micron resolution is required.
The core activities and expertise of the Laser Group at Institute of Product and Production Engineering, FHNW, are ultrafast (femtosecond) laser development and laser applications. In the Laser Group laboratories there are several laser work stations with lasers delivering IR, green and UV wavelengths, ns, ps, and fs pulse duration. In addition, there are optical, laser scanning, and electron microscopes for quick diagnostics of micromachined samples. The
Laser Group has an extensive expertise in micromachining applications and database of process parameters for metals, dielectrics, semiconductors, polymers and glasses. This extensive equipment and know-how will ensure successful tasks in this project - to develop applications for the new ultrafast GHz laser and compare results with existing, conventional kHz and MHz pulse repetition rate lasers.
